Supreme Court of India judgments

Judgment texts, headnotes, keywords and lists of cases cited come from the Supreme Court of India's Digital Supreme Court Reports (e-SCR). We obtain them through the Indian Supreme Court Judgments open dataset on the Registry of Open Data on AWS, which is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. The code that builds that dataset is at github.com/vanga/indian-supreme-court-judgments.

Under Section 52(1)(q)(iv) of the Copyright Act, 1957, reproducing a judgment or order of a court is not an infringement of copyright, unless the court has prohibited it.

How we process the text

We extract the text from each official PDF, remove page headers and footers, and split the report into its parts: issue for consideration, headnote, cases cited, Acts, keywords, case details and the judgment itself. This is done by software and can introduce errors such as broken words or misplaced lines. Every judgment page links to the official PDF, which is the authoritative version.

What we do not use

We do not copy headnotes, summaries, paragraph numbering or citations from commercial law reports or other legal databases. Citations to commercial reporters that appear inside a judgment are part of the court's own text.
